Air and Container Shipping From Canada to Italy

Air freight suits urgent cargo. LCL shares container space, while FCL gives your shipment a dedicated container. The right choice depends on packed dimensions, weight, handling needs, loading access and the full cost of getting the cargo to its Italian destination.

Air freight

Urgent parts, higher-value commercial goods and time-sensitive freight accepted by the airline.

What affects the decision: Chargeable weight, packed dimensions, cargo restrictions, capacity and connections.

LCL — less than container load

Pallets, crates, inventory or approved household goods that do not need a dedicated container.

What affects the decision: Packed volume and weight, consolidation timing, extra handling and charges at both ends.

FCL — full container load

Larger loads, machinery or shipments that benefit from a dedicated loading plan.

What affects the decision: 20-ft or 40-ft equipment, piece dimensions, weight distribution, loading method and site access.

Vehicle shipping

Eligible cars, SUVs, motorcycles, classic or commercial vehicles.

What affects the decision: Container or available RoRo service, operability, fuel/battery rules and Italian import eligibility.

Choosing Between LCL and FCL

Compare both methods using the same pickup and delivery requirements. A lower ocean-freight figure can leave out collection, consolidation, terminal handling, clearance or inland delivery. Ask which charges are included before deciding whether shared space or a dedicated container is better for your load.

There is no single volume at which FCL becomes the right answer for every shipment. For 20-ft versus 40-ft equipment, BriCargo reviews how the packed pieces fit, their weights, loading and unloading arrangements, and access at both addresses. Heavy or oversized pieces need a separate equipment review.

Household Goods and Personal Effects

Approved household shipments can move by air, LCL or FCL. Provide an itemized inventory with quantities and values, and disclose regulated contents before packing. Shipment acceptance and any relocation relief must be reviewed for the individual case. For vehicles, follow the separate empty-vehicle and loading requirements below.

How Much Does Shipping From Canada to Italy Cost?

Use these approximate Canadian-dollar ranges for early planning. Your price will vary with cargo type, packed dimensions and weight, timing, carrier availability, routing, equipment and the services required at each end. The figures cover the stated movement only; your written quote confirms the full scope and payable charges.

Shipping method and planning basisApproximate range in CAD

Planning estimates dated 24 August 2026, reviewed for continued use on 13 September 2026. Approximate, non-binding figures; they are not live carrier rates or guaranteed BriCargo quotes.

Compare the Complete Quote

For each option, check pickup and loading, main carriage, handling at both ends, customs brokerage and final delivery. The table's LCL, FCL and RoRo figures are not complete door-to-door totals. Air freight uses chargeable weight: the greater of actual weight or the applicable volumetric weight.

Charges to check separately:

  • Pickup, loading, lashing and final delivery
  • Origin and destination handling, including consolidation where applicable
  • Customs brokerage, duties and taxes
  • Cargo insurance and any special handling
  • Storage, demurrage, detention and inspection-related charges
  • Fuel, peak-season or capacity surcharges

Whether these charges are included or additional must be stated in your quote. Cargo acceptance, site access, the cargo-ready date and available equipment can also change the total. Check the quote's currency, validity period and which charges are payable by the shipper, importer or consignee before booking.

How Long Does Shipping From Canada to Italy Take?

Main-carriage time covers only part of the journey. A complete shipment can also need pickup, export preparation, consolidation, carrier cut-offs, Italian customs review, terminal release and final delivery. Ask for a timeline based on your cargo-ready date and the services in your quote.

Main air movement

Around 3–7 days after airline acceptance. Airport pairing, cargo acceptance, capacity and connections affect the booked service.

Coordinated air shipment

Often 5–10 business days where pickup, export handling, screening, connections, customs and final delivery are included. Shipment-specific requirements can extend this.

Montreal-to-Italy Container Examples

The following carrier-published examples describe the ocean movement to named Italian ports. They exclude Canadian pickup, customs release and final delivery. LCL also needs consolidation before sailing and separation of shipments after arrival; these vessel timings are not a complete LCL delivery estimate.

Hapag-Lloyd MCAMontreal → Salerno20 days
Hapag-Lloyd MCAMontreal → Livorno22 days
Hapag-Lloyd MCAMontreal → Genoa23 days
CMA CGM MEDCANMontreal → Salerno23 days

Examples reviewed on 13 September 2026 from Hapag-Lloyd MCA and CMA CGM MEDCAN. The MCA table carries an update date of 26 April 2023 and provides route context, not a current departure schedule. The booking must confirm the service, sailing and routing for either carrier.

Rolling-Cargo Network Examples

ACL's published North America-to-Mediterranean network lists Salerno at 25 days, several other Italian destinations at 27 days, and Monfalcone/Ravenna at 37 days. This is network context, including connecting services, rather than a direct Canada-to-Italy sailing promise. Your vehicle's acceptance, departure terminal and available route must be confirmed. See the ACL Mediterranean RoRo network, reviewed on 13 September 2026.

Air planning estimates are dated 24 August 2026; carrier examples were rechecked on 13 September 2026. Cut-offs, consolidation, transshipment, weather, congestion, inspections, document corrections, equipment and delivery access can affect timing. The booked schedule and written quote control; no arrival or clearance date is guaranteed.

How Canada-to-Italy Freight Is Routed

Your Canadian pickup city and Italian delivery postcode help determine the loading gateway, main carriage and inland plan. BriCargo can coordinate origins across Canada and destinations throughout Italy, subject to cargo acceptance, access and current coverage. The pickup city may differ from the port or airport where the shipment leaves Canada.

Routing decisionPractical Canada-to-Italy context
Eastern Canadian ocean loadingMontreal is the origin of the published Salerno, Livorno and Genoa examples above. Halifax or Saint John may be considered where the cargo and booked service support them.
Other Canadian originsToronto ocean freight may move inland to the selected port or consolidation facility. Vancouver, Prince Rupert and other origins can require connecting, transshipment or inland-supported routing.
Italian ocean arrivalGenoa, Livorno and Salerno are useful planning examples. Other suitable ports, including La Spezia and Vado Ligure/Savona, can be reviewed against the cargo and final-delivery address.
Air gateway selectionToronto Pearson, Montréal-Trudeau and Vancouver are Canadian examples; Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino are Italian examples. Other suitable international airports can be reviewed for cargo acceptance and capacity.
Inland, southern and island deliveryThe quote must account for the final address, unloading arrangements, access and any onward connection. A port arrival does not include every delivery stage automatically.

The written quote identifies the planned gateway and scope. A service from a Canadian origin does not necessarily mean a nonstop flight or direct sailing. For other routes, explore BriCargo's European freight destinations.

Shipping a Vehicle From Canada to Italy

BriCargo can arrange eligible cars, SUVs, motorcycles, classic vehicles and commercial vehicles by container or available RoRo service. Acceptance depends on the vehicle, carrier, terminal and route. Confirm Italian import, conformity and registration requirements before booking the transport.

Containerized Vehicle Shipping

Container service requires a confirmed loading and lashing plan. Fuel systems and electric or hybrid batteries require carrier-specific review. Assume the vehicle must be empty unless BriCargo gives written shipment-specific approval for separately packed and declared cargo after reviewing loading, securement, dangerous-goods status, inventory and insurance requirements.

RoRo Vehicle Shipping

RoRo vehicles must be tendered empty and meet the booked carrier's and terminal's movement and handling conditions. Non-operable units require advance approval and special handling. Reconfirm acceptance and terminal instructions before delivering the vehicle; a route shown in a network schedule does not establish acceptance for every vehicle.

Vehicle information to add to your quote request:

Year, make, model, VIN, packed or overall dimensions as applicable, weight, measurement units, value, operability, fuel/battery type, ownership or lien records, both postcodes, and container or RoRo preference if known.

The approximate operable-vehicle RoRo range is in the cost section. Containerized vehicles need a quote based on the loading plan and equipment. Pickup, terminal handling, customs coordination and delivery are included only where stated.

BriCargo can coordinate vehicle-import or registration steps when included in the quote. Transport does not establish Italian admissibility, tax treatment, conformity approval, registration or permission for road use. Review BriCargo's vehicle-shipping service before preparing the vehicle.

Customs, Documents and Cargo Requirements for Italy

Prepare the Canadian export and Italian import information before delivering cargo to a warehouse, airline or ocean terminal. Requirements depend on the goods, value, origin, importer, mode and intended use. BriCargo can coordinate document preparation and broker communication within the agreed service scope.

Documents to Prepare

  • Commercial invoice, or the appropriate inventory/value information for personal goods
  • Packing list with piece counts, packed dimensions and weights with units, and contents
  • Details needed for the bill of lading or air waybill
  • Canadian export declaration where required
  • Importer identification and EORI information where applicable
  • Origin declaration and supporting records if claiming CETA preference
  • Required permits, certificates, vehicle records or dangerous-goods documents

Who Provides the Customs Information?

Canadian exporter: Confirm whether export reporting is required and arrange the declaration through CERS or another accepted method. Non-restricted commercial goods sent to Italy generally require a declaration at CAD $2,000 or more; controlled goods can require reporting and permits regardless of value. The exporter remains responsible for complete, accurate information even when a service provider files it. Check the Canadian export reporting requirements.

Importer and customs representative: Confirm the importer setup and applicable EORI identification before dispatch. The requirement depends on the party's customs role; do not assume every Canadian sender needs its own EORI simply because the goods are going to Italy. See EU EORI guidance.

Carrier or other responsible filing party: EU advance safety and security information is submitted through an Entry Summary Declaration under ICS2 before arrival; air cargo also requires pre-loading data. Supply accurate cargo and party details, and confirm who handles each required filing under the shipment arrangements. See ICS2 guidance.

Goods claiming CETA preference: Qualifying origin and an appropriate origin declaration are required. Dispatching goods from Canada alone does not make them duty-free. Import VAT and other destination charges can still apply when goods qualify for CETA. Confirm classification, customs value and payable charges with the importer or broker, and check the CETA origin requirements before claiming preferential treatment.

Cargo That Needs Advance Review

Declare batteries, perfumes, chemicals, dangerous goods, food, alcohol, plants, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, controlled medicines, unfinished wood, temperature-controlled cargo and heavy or oversized pieces before booking. Packaging, permits, handling and carrier acceptance may need separate review. Illegal drugs, contraband, undeclared dangerous goods and other prohibited items are not accepted. Read the restricted and prohibited items guidance.

For household goods, provide an itemized inventory and residence evidence if claiming relief. For vehicles, supply ownership and identification records as well as condition, fuel and battery details. Relief, vehicle eligibility and registration must be assessed for the individual case.

The exporter and importer retain their legal obligations. The broker advises on classification, value and applicable charges; customs authorities determine assessment, inspection and release. BriCargo can coordinate the quoted steps but cannot guarantee customs, duty, tax or vehicle-registration outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not know my shipment's cubic volume?

Send the packed length, width and height of every piece in cm or inches, the number of pieces and their weights in kg or lb. Note whether pieces can be stacked. BriCargo can use those details to assess the space needed; measurements taken before final packing may need revision.

Can pickup and final delivery be included?

Yes, when quoted and supported by the cargo, addresses, access and current coverage. Explain whether collection or delivery is residential or commercial and what loading or unloading arrangements are available. A terminal or port price does not automatically include those services.

Can I deliver cargo or a vehicle to a terminal myself?

Self-delivery can be reviewed for the booking. Obtain the nominated facility, acceptance instructions and cut-off before travelling. Cargo and vehicles must meet the booked carrier's requirements; do not deliver to a terminal based only on a general route example.

Can I use my own customs broker?

Include the broker's details and the tasks they will handle in your request. BriCargo can coordinate with your broker within the agreed scope, so filing, clearance communication, terminal release and delivery responsibilities are clear before dispatch.

Does a freight quote include cargo insurance?

Only where the quote expressly includes it. Tell BriCargo the cargo value and request insurance review if needed. Confirm the quoted cover, exclusions and any packing or declaration conditions before shipment.

Can I request a vehicle quote if RoRo is not listed in the form?

Yes. Describe the vehicle in Cargo Description and write “vehicle” or “RoRo” in Comments with its year, make, model, VIN, dimensions, condition and fuel/battery details. BriCargo will review suitable container or available RoRo options; the request does not confirm acceptance.
